Between December 3 and December 8, 2005 a Dream Team of Pond Builders converged on Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. They were brought together by Aquascape Designs, Inc. (ADI). Their purpose: camaraderie, education and enjoyment. All three goals were exceeded.
The United States, Canada and Ireland sent representatives. Over 140 participants from companies in three countries spread the water gardening good news to Mexico. I took part in the multinational pondless waterfall construction project as well as all the educational seminars and brotherly love. Yes, ADI is like a family where each member gives and takes and learns and teaches helps and even loves the others. The pondless waterfall construction project took place at the compound of a friend of ADI. It is the first pondless waterfall in all of Mexico. A pondless waterfall is a waterfall or stream that disappears into a basin of rock and gravel. New ideas and technology on this project allow for a pond effect over the basin regardless of the waterfall level in the basin. Water is at a premium in Los Cabos where the desert and the mountains meet the Pacific and the Sea of Cortes. They get less than one foot of rain a year, and usually all in just a few days, turning aryos (dry riverbeds) into whitewater rapids. When the owner is away, the pondless waterfall can be turned off, and like an aryo, sculptural rock and gravel beautifies its environ. At night, 12 volt lights enhance the drama of the rocks and the falling water. The sound permeates the lowest beachfront rooms of the sprawling, multilevel estate as does the rhythmic surf. This paradise may be 3000 miles away, but it could be in your own backyard. |
